Born in Germany, 1951. MA Clinical Psychology. Independent Studio Potter since 1987. Beck's ceramic vessels explore the boundary between the useful container and its abstraction into a sculptural "vessel". The object results from a combination of centered and uncentered, unconventional throwing, and an aggressive manipulation of the outer body. The vessel shape, defying symmetry and balance, moves from wave to angle, from flow to resistance. Glaze is used, sometimes in multiple layers, to further enhance the inherent tension in the lines of the piece. The pieces are made in stoneware or porcelain, fired in an electric kiln to 1250c. |
